How Often Should You Really Clean a Pool in Phoenix?

Every-other-week service is the most expensive way to save money on a pool in Arizona. Here is what the schedule actually needs to be, and why.

How Often Should You Really Clean a Pool in Phoenix?

The honest answer is weekly, and in Phoenix it is not close. A Valley pool spends nine months of the year under sun strong enough to strip its sanitiser and is topped up with some of the hardest tap water in the country. Left alone for a fortnight in July it does not drift out of balance — it turns.

Owners who move to every-other-week service almost always do it to save money, and almost always end up spending more. Here is the arithmetic nobody explains at the pool store.

What actually happens in week two

Free chlorine in an outdoor pool here drops measurably every day. June through August sit above 110°F for weeks at a time, under UV that destroys unstabilised chlorine within hours, and under that kind of sun chlorine that is not properly stabilised is gone within a day or two of being added.

By day eight or nine with nobody dosing, free chlorine is at or near zero. Algae does not wait for a threshold — it starts colonising walls and steps immediately, and it is established well before you can see green in the water.

Meanwhile pH has drifted, debris on the bottom is decomposing and consuming still more chlorine, and the filter is running against a load nobody has checked.

The cost of the week you skipped

A green pool recovery is not a bottle of algaecide. It is repeated shocking, full brushing, several days of continuous filtration, at least one filter clean and usually multiple return visits. It typically costs several times a month of routine service.

Then there is the equipment side. Running a pump against a loaded filter for weeks, or letting an unbalanced pool sit at low pH, quietly shortens the life of the most expensive parts of the system.

What weekly service covers in Maricopa County

A proper weekly visit is eight things, in order: brush the walls and stairs, clean the bottom of the pool, clean the tile at the waterline, skim the surface, empty the baskets and traps, balance and add the chemicals, backwash the filter, and email you a complete service report as a PDF.

Do those eight things every seven days and pool ownership is genuinely low-effort. Skip weeks and you are managing a recurring emergency.

The exception nobody mentions

If a pool is fully screened, heavily shaded from direct sun, lightly used and on a well-maintained automatic cleaner, it can hold longer between visits than a typical Phoenix pool. That describes very few pools here, and none of them during monsoon season, roughly mid-June through September.
